What are smart homes?

The concept of smart housing goes beyond the concept of a smart home, as it concerns a set of measures, involving digital technologies, to optimize the routine of residents not only in their own homes, but in their relationship with the neighborhood where they live, with the city and with the neighborhood through measures that influence, for example, the reduction of housing costs and environmental impacts.

In other words, the trend towards smart housing ( or smart living ) is directly linked to the quality of life of the population and not just of the individual. In this way, homes are increasingly connected to cities.

Smart door entry systems, electronic locks, smart lockers, integrated commercial areas, etc. are examples of systems that are part of smart homes . But when we think more broadly, we can add to this list: photovoltaic panels or digital energy management resources, for example.

Therefore, the concept of smart housing is broader than the concepts of smart home or connected home, although they are interconnected.

In addition to the concept of smart housing, it is interesting to make it clear that there is also a difference between a smart home and a connected home.

In the first case, all processes are automated , that is, actions are performed without the need for intervention by the resident. Example: If you have a coffee maker connected to the internet and program the device's system to make coffee every day at 7 am, you have automated the coffee making process and no longer need daily commands for this activity.

In a connected home , you can ask the coffee maker to make coffee using voice commands. In this case, the resident's intervention was required in the process.

Whether it is the connection between a home and its internal devices or the connection between homes and neighborhoods or cities, there are pillars that make up the concept of smart housing. They are: Connectivity, automation, security and sustainability.
