Venture capital (VC) is a type of investment focused on companies that are not publicly traded. It is common to find startups and early-stage companies in this type of investment, as they need resources to scale. This is why venture capital is also known as risk capital.
From an economic point of view, investing in companies of this nature is important, as it helps small and medium-sized companies to grow and startups to develop and be able to enter the stock market, influencing the national economy.
The venture capital investment scenario in Brazil and around the world
In Brazil, the VC investment scenario varies. During 2020, Brazil received approximately US$2.5 billion in venture capital investments, according to KPMG . In other words, overcoming the challenges related to the COVID-19 pandemic, the investment scenario, in several sectors, was optimistic.
However, according to a KPMG report for the first quarter of 2023, there was a global reduction in VC investment activity.
Many global factors may have influenced this reduction, such as economic instability and political crises. However, this is the time to look closely at these new forms of investment.
According to the Venture Pulse Q1 2023 study by KPMG
(quote) “The global venture capital market in 2023 also indicates that investors are increasingly comfortable investing in emerging regions, such as South America, Latin America and Africa, which is very promising for Brazil.”
VC as a real estate investment
In the real estate market, innovative business models are gaining ground exponentially. I am talking about companies with a wide range of purposes, such as those that transform the way people buy properties, those that offer solutions for managing condominiums and rentals, subscription home solutions, companies that work on transforming the subdivision sector, etc.
This type of real estate investment can be advantageous for anyone. In fact, it is a great real estate investment for developers themselves, who are already present in the market. In this case, the possibilities arise on both sides: the developer who invests and the one who seeks investment for his company.
