What is DeepSeek and how did it come about?

Deepseek was born from an ambitious dream. Originating as a research center linked to the quantitative hedge fund High-Flyer, created in 2015, the belgium mobile database initially focused on advanced computing for financial analysis.

In 2019, Liang Wenfeng, founder and CEO, decided to redirect High-Flyer towards developing AI-based trading algorithms.

The milestone came in 2023, with the founding of Fire-Flyer, a research laboratory specializing in Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), which later gave rise to Deepseek.

That same year, the company launched models such as Deepseek Coder and Deepseek LLM, which promised to compete with GPT-4 but faced scalability challenges.

These experiments, however, paved the way for Deepseek-R1, whose launch in 2025 cemented the brand at the top of the most downloaded apps in the United States.
